Action Learning Explained

Action Learning (AL) is a powerful performance improvement / management technique. The essence of AL is that people work in a group (set) to help each other find solutions to real work problems. These are discussed and actions are taken back in the workplace. The process is designed to help each individual to acquire a wider range of skills, techniques and understanding that will be relevant to future problems. Meetings are held on a regular basis, usually for a half-day every 3 to 6 weeks, with the problem discussion time divided equally between set members at each meeting. The benefits gained are in proportion to the time invested and the frequency of meetings.

Every Action Learning Set will introduce their own style to the process but the key features of AL are that it:

  • Is centred on the need to problem solve
  • Is participant driven
  • Promotes individual development
  • Is supported by the organisation.

Action Learning Sets usually consist of 4 – 6 members, all of whom are committed to learning and development. In turn, they explain their problem to the rest of the group who then ask challenging questions of the problem owner in order to broaden the owner’s perception and understanding of the issue. The problem owner is encouraged, with the help of the other set members, to explore a range of solutions before deciding on a course of action to try in the workplace. Feedback may also be given to the problem owner regarding their own behaviour / attitude. The next time the set meets, the outcomes from the actions are discussed and reviewed.

Action Learning Sets have a facilitator who attends set meetings to oversee the whole process and ensures that the set is working in a productive way. Initially the facilitator guides the set in the AL process. The facilitator does not need experience or knowledge of the company but does need to be skilled in:

  • Issues regarding group processes
  • Empowering and building groups
  • Active listening and open questioning
  • Supporting and challenging
  • Judging when and when not to intervene

AL enables individuals to make progress on important and difficult issues, so providing benefits to individuals, teams and organisations.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Explained

Neuro-Linguistic Programming, more commonly known as NLP, is otherwise known as the Study of Excellence.

NLP was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder.

They asked themselves why it was that many people could be regarded as high achievers, yet only an elite few go beyond this and achieve true excellence and sustained peak performance.

After studying exceptional individuals such as: Milton Erickson – Psychologist and Hypnotherapist; Psychotherapists Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir; and even the great Walt Disney, the search for excellence began.

In modelling these, and many other peak performers, NLP ties together their strategies of excellence into a new Science of Personal Achievement.

The Society of Neuro-Linguistic Programming

NLP works predominantly with the subconscious mind, capable of performing two million different activities simultaneously. The subconscious is the brain’s ‘powerhouse’; with no computer yet designed that can match its capabilities.

As individuals, we prefer to rely on the conscious mind, which can typically only process seven different things at any one time.

NLP has become a recognised leading tool in training, and invaluable in business to improve performance, develop individuals and teams, and bring out the potential for excellence; thus enhancing performance and career prospects.

If you always do what you have always done; you will always get what you have always got.

So, to achieve more, you have to do something different.

Isn’t it amazing, how highly successful people do not rest on their laurels, they try different approaches until they get even more, and perform even better – you just have to look at Richard Branson as an example.

NLP will not only change your career and give a positive impact in your business; it will have a profound positive effect on your whole life.

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) Explained

Thought Field Therapy, or, to give it it’s full title, Callahan Techniques® Thought Field Therapy® was developed by Roger J. Callahan, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist from California.

To keep things simple we call it TFT, you may see references to CTTFT in some literature.

TFT is also known as the five minute phobia cure. TFT has been in development for over 24 years, and provides the code to nature’s healing system, allowing you to eliminate most negative emotions, within minutes.

You may have seen the likes of Paul McKenna; of Television fame, using a technique whereby he asks his clients to tap in various points around the body – these are known as Meridians.

Meridians are similar to acupuncture points; however, needles are not used when treating with TFT, simply tapping with fingers on the Meridians.

TFT can be used to achieve Peak Performance, through to treating stress, anxiety, and other emotional issues.

Examples of areas where TFT has successfully been used are:

Treatment of Fears and Phobias e.g. spiders and public speaking.

Treating Anxiety, Stress & Panic Disorders

Overcoming Addictive Urges.

Treating Simple and Complex Trauma.

Treat emotional issues such as: Intimidation, Guilt, Jealousy, Anger & Rage.

Treating Depression.

TFT has also been used in trauma situations such as:

The Nairobi, Kenya, bombing of the US Embassy.

Treating American War Veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Treating patients in Kosova, suffering from PTSD.

Treatment with TFT Techniques can resolve complex issues as quickly as ten minutes.

This is a real breakthrough in the treatment of emotional disorders.
